A new kitchen behind a familiar dining room

A payment can look familiar while the machinery behind it changes. Visa's stablecoin announcement offers a window into that quieter transformation.

what the customer seessettlement behind the scenesinstitutions settling obligationswhat the numbers actually measure

🍽️ A restaurant can rebuild its kitchen while leaving the dining room almost untouched. You still choose from a menu. Your server still brings the meal. Yet behind the doors, new equipment and a different workflow may change how the entire evening runs.

Something similar can happen in payments.

The part you see is familiar: present a card, receive a confirmation, continue with your day. Behind that interaction are arrangements through which financial institutions meet their obligations to one another. Settlement is part of that backstage work — the movement of funds that fulfils those obligations.

The announcement

🍳 On 16 December 2025, Visa announced US settlement using Circle's USDC stablecoin. Cross River Bank and Lead Bank had begun settling with Visa in USDC on Solana. Visa described seven-day availability while keeping the consumer card experience unchanged. 🏦

Read Visa's announcement

In restaurant terms, the announcement concerned the kitchen. A customer would need no new ritual at the table for the underlying system to change.

Reading adoption stories

That distinction makes adoption stories easier to read. Ask where the technology enters the process:

  • 🙋 Is it something a customer uses directly?
  • 🏦 A tool for a bank's treasury team?
  • 🔁 A way for institutions to move money between themselves?

"Crypto adoption" becomes much more informative when we can name the job being done.

Reading the numbers

📊 Numbers need the same care. Visa's release reported an annualized stablecoin settlement run rate of USD 3.5 billion as of 30 November 2025.

Think of annualizing as asking what a recent pace would amount to if maintained for a year. It is not the same as counting a completed year's activity — nor was that figure identified as Solana-only volume.

The last step

There is one more step between an adoption announcement and an investment conclusion. A busy restaurant does not automatically reward every company whose equipment sits in its kitchen — you still need to understand the contracts and the economics.

Likewise, evidence that a blockchain is used does not, by itself, tell us how much value reaches holders of its native token.

FORTUNA's interest is in following that chain carefully: the operational change, the evidence of continued use, and the economics that follow. Updated participation and recurring activity would tell us more than the announcement alone.

The dining room may look familiar for a long time. That is a reason to pay attention to the work behind the doors.

🔎 Reporting scope: Visa's December 2025 announcement — not a measurement of the programme's September 2026 scale. Settlement figures are company-reported.
