What it is
Aerodrome Finance is the dominant automated market maker (AMM) on the Base blockchain, using a vote-escrowed token model to direct liquidity incentives to pools.
Technology & consensus
Per the official whitepaper, Aerodrome is a next-generation AMM on Base combining features of Curve, Convex, and Uniswap, designed as Base's central liquidity hub. AERO is an ERC-20 token; each epoch, AERO emissions are distributed to liquidity providers proportional to votes received. Holders lock AERO (up to 4 years) to receive veAERO (ERC-721 NFTs), which directs emissions via gauge voting and earns 100% of trading fees from voted pools plus voter incentives and a weekly rebase that offsets vote-power dilution.
Token utility
AERO is the governance and incentive token: locked as veAERO it grants voting rights over emission distribution and governance decisions, plus fee-sharing and rebase rewards. Liquid AERO itself confers no voting or fee rights; 40M AERO was allocated to voter incentives at genesis.
Key risks & notes
Per the official whitepaper, AERO has no intrinsic value or asset backing and derives worth entirely from protocol utility. Risks disclosed: weekly emission-driven supply inflation, significant price volatility tied to Base DeFi activity, dual-token complexity (AERO vs veAERO), and regulatory uncertainty for DeFi governance tokens. Aerodrome's fortunes are concentrated on the Base chain ecosystem.
