What it is
Band Protocol is a chain-agnostic decentralized data oracle: BandChain, a Cosmos-SDK blockchain, aggregates real-world data (prices and other signals) and delivers it to smart contracts on any blockchain via data tunnels.
Technology & consensus
BandChain runs sub-second block times with reserved capacity for oracle operations; validators submit price data per symbol at intervals set by the Signaling Hub, where staked BAND delegators vote on which symbols are supported and how often they are fed. Final prices are computed per block as a voting-power-weighted median with recency multipliers, and delivered cross-chain via interchain messaging and threshold signatures through 'data tunnels' that dApps fund with BAND.
Token utility
BAND is staked by validators and delegators to secure the chain and submit price data; delegators vote with staked BAND on which price signals are supported; dApp developers fund data tunnels in BAND to pay for oracle delivery. Validators that fail to report are deactivated and lose revenue (they are not directly slashed for bad data).
Key risks & notes
The official 2024 whitepaper was read for this summary. Risks: strong competition from Chainlink (dominant oracle) and Pyth in a winner-take-most market; validators face no slashing for inaccurate data, relying on economic and reputational incentives; and BAND demand is tied to data-tunnel usage, which is still ramping.
