What it is
Hyperliquid is a high-performance Layer 1 blockchain built for a fully onchain open financial system, home to one of the largest decentralized perpetual-futures exchanges by volume.
Technology & consensus
It uses a custom HotStuff-inspired consensus algorithm, HyperBFT, with one-block finality. State execution is split into HyperCore (fully onchain perp and spot order books processing ~200k orders/second) and HyperEVM (general-purpose EVM smart contracts secured by the same HyperBFT consensus). Validators post oracle prices every 3 seconds using weighted medians across major exchanges, and staking follows a delegated proof-of-stake model.
Token utility
HYPE is the native gas token: it pays for HyperEVM transactions and for perp-market deployment auctions (HIP-3). Holders can stake HYPE with validators to secure the network and earn rewards (roughly 2.4% APR at high stake levels, paid from the emissions reserve), and it is used for the chain's bridge and validator self-delegation requirements.
Key risks & notes
No standalone official whitepaper exists; the team's official docs site is the canonical source (summary grounded in the official docs, which I read). Centralization concerns: validator set is relatively small, there is no automatic slashing, and ~23.8% of supply went to core contributors. The Arbitrum bridge depends on a 2/3 validator quorum. Faces intense competition from other high-throughput L1s and perpetual DEXs.
