What it is
Decentraland is a blockchain-based virtual world (metaverse) powered by Ethereum, where users create, experience, and monetize content and applications. Land is permanently owned by the community as scarce NFTs, giving owners full control over what content is published on their parcels.
Technology & consensus
The whitepaper defines a three-layer architecture: a consensus layer (Ethereum ledger recording LAND ownership), a content distribution layer (BitTorrent/DHT for parcel content), and a real-time peer-to-peer layer for user interaction, plus payment channels and an identity system. LAND parcels are non-fungible assets identified by cartesian coordinates (x,y), acquired by spending (burning) MANA.
Token utility
MANA is the ERC-20 currency of the world: it buys LAND parcels, pays for in-world digital goods and services, and is staked/held to participate in the Decentraland DAO's governance votes on platform decisions.
Key risks & notes
The 2017 whitepaper is dated relative to the live platform (DAO, L2/marketplace evolution); metaverse user demand remains uncertain and faces competition from both crypto and Big Tech virtual worlds. MANA has a large historical supply overhang and its price is highly cyclical with NFT/metaverse hype.
