What it is
Swell is a non-custodial Ethereum liquid staking and restaking protocol. Users stake or restake ETH and receive yield-bearing liquid tokens (swETH as an LST, rswETH as an LRT) that can be used across DeFi. (Swell publishes no standalone whitepaper PDF; its official docs are the canonical source.)
Technology & consensus
Runs on Ethereum: staked ETH secures the network via Ethereum proof-of-stake while Swell issues liquid receipt tokens. Restaking routes through EigenLayer so stakers also earn restaked AVS rewards. Swell also launched a 'restaked rollup' L2 built on Polygon CDK with AltLayer and EigenLayer, offering decentralized sequencing, verification, and faster finality.
Token utility
SWELL is the protocol's native utility and governance token, used to participate in Swell DAO governance and to incentivize staking and restaking. Max supply is 10B; allocations are 35% community/ecosystem, 25% team, 25% private investors, 15% foundation.
Key risks & notes
Competes with dominant liquid-staking providers (Lido) in a commoditized market; restaking adds slashing and complexity risk. 50% of supply sits with team/investors, creating unlock overhang, and the token has traded far below listing levels.
