What it is
Maple Finance is an onchain asset manager for institutional credit, and Syrup is its permissionless DeFi extension letting anyone deposit stablecoins (syrupUSDC/syrupUSDT) to earn yield sourced from overcollateralized loans to large crypto institutions.
Technology & consensus
Lending pools are managed by professional pool delegates who underwrite KYC'd institutional borrowers; loan terms, collateral and repayments are transparent onchain. Syrup packages this institutional yield into composable DeFi vault tokens across Ethereum, Solana, Arbitrum and Plasma.
Token utility
SYRUP governs the entire Maple ecosystem (both Maple and Syrup) and can be staked as stSYRUP to share in protocol growth: stakers receive emissions (roughly 5% APY from new supply, 20% of emissions) plus loyalty 'Drips' convertible to SYRUP, and governance has proposed directing 20% of protocol revenues to buybacks distributed to stakers. SYRUP replaced the legacy MPL token at a 1:100 migration ratio.
Key risks & notes
No official whitepaper exists; summary grounded in official docs and project announcements. Core risk is borrower credit/default risk (Maple previously offered undercollateralized loans), plus smart-contract risk, centralized pool delegates, dependence on institutional borrowing demand for yield, and regulatory exposure for lending products.
