What it is
Worldcoin (now branded 'World') is a digital identity and financial network aiming to establish global proof-of-personhood, so every human can prove uniqueness online and receive a share of the network's token.
Technology & consensus
A proprietary biometric device, the Orb, scans irises to verify unique humanness; World ID then uses zero-knowledge proofs to let users prove they are a unique human without revealing personal data. The ecosystem includes World Chain (an Ethereum L2 that prioritizes human over bot transactions), the World App self-custodial wallet, the nonprofit Worldcoin Foundation as steward, and Tools for Humanity as the technology developer.
Token utility
WLD is freely given to verified unique humans as the network's incentive and currency; it is intended for payments, future governance participation, and ecosystem use. Total supply is 10 billion, allocated across users, contributors, investors and network operations; governance is currently centralized under the Worldcoin Foundation with progressive decentralization planned, and supply inflation is contractually barred for 15 years after launch (capped at 1.5%/year thereafter, only via governance).
Key risks & notes
Research note: full whitepaper fetch was unavailable this session; summary grounded in the official whitepaper content surfaced via search. Biometric collection has triggered regulatory bans and investigations in several jurisdictions, and WLD is not offered to US residents. Orb manufacturing and operations are centralized, and the entire thesis depends on mass World ID adoption that is far from proven.
