What it is
Horizen is a zero-knowledge-enabled blockchain platform whose Zendoo protocol allows customizable, zk-SNARK-verified sidechains to interoperate with the mainchain.
Technology & consensus
Per the official Zendoo whitepaper (as described in Horizen's official repositories), Horizen's core innovation is a zk-SNARK-verifiable cross-chain transfer protocol: the mainchain remains agnostic to sidechain internals while sidechains prove state transitions via succinct zero-knowledge proofs (withdrawal certificates). Sidechains declare custom SNARK verification keys, manage epochs with liveness monitoring, and support forward/backward transfers of ZEN between mainchain and sidechains, with 51%-attack and replay protection on the mainchain.
Token utility
ZEN is the native coin of the Horizen mainchain: used for transaction fees, as the transferable asset moved between mainchain and sidechains via forward/backward transfers, and for securing the network via mining and the secure/super node collateral system.
Key risks & notes
The Zendoo paper is a sidechain research paper, and Horizen's strategy has evolved since (including deprecating its original mainchain approach); ZEN's role has shifted with those pivots, so historical documentation may not reflect current token mechanics. ZEN competes in a crowded privacy/L1-adjacent space and remains exposed to regulatory scrutiny of privacy-oriented chains.
