UtilityGovernance token for ZKsync — holders vote on protocol decisions.

What it is

ZKsync is an Ethereum ZK-rollup ecosystem (the Elastic Network) of interoperable ZK Chains built on the open-source ZK Stack. It uses zero-knowledge validity proofs settled to Ethereum for scaling with L1-grade security.

Technology & consensus

Validity proofs are generated off-chain and verified by shared L1 contracts, with a shared router contract enabling trustless interoperability across ZK Chains. Governance follows a three-body model: the Token Assembly, the Security Council, and the ZK Guardians.

Token utility

ZK is primarily a governance token (one token equals one vote, with delegation), with a 21B total supply split roughly two-thirds community and one-third team/investors on a four-year unlock. The paper outlines an evolving fee, revenue, and cryptoeconomic framework for the Elastic Network.

Key risks & notes

Token utility and the cryptoeconomic framework are still evolving. Sequencer and operator centralization persist, with reliance on Matter Labs. Team and investor unlocks continue through June 2028, creating overhang. An April 2025 compromised admin-key mint incident highlights key-management risk.

What does the holder own?

Title, redemption claim, fractional ownership, reserve exposure — or just narrative.

ZK is the governance token of ZK Nation, governing the ZKsync protocol and its Elastic Network of ZK Stack chains (holders delegate voting power at delegate.zknation.io). It began as a pure governance instrument; a November 2025 forum proposal by Alex Gluchowski would add utility (interoperability fees, enterprise licensing revenue) but that is a proposal, not enacted token mechanics as of this research.

Verified
Who holds the underlying?

Needs an identifiable custodian or entity — not a wallet address or a label.

No underlying or backing exists by design — a verified negative finding. ZK is a bearer governance token; the cited disclosure notes explicitly that no governance-approved, contractual, or programmatic rights currently direct fee routing, treasury distributions, or rewards to token holders.

Verified
How are reserves checked?

Custodian records → inventory → third-party audit → supply reconciliation.

No reserves exist by design. ZK is a fixed-supply ERC-20 on Ethereum (contract referenced in the ZK Nation docs) and is auditable on-chain; governance-approved capped minters are tracked publicly. Confidence medium because supply figures were not independently reconciled here.

medium confidence

Verified
How does redemption work?

Eligibility, minimums, fees, KYC, settlement — and what happens to the token.

No redemption is promised. Governance rights are exercised by voting/delegating; there is no issuer mechanism to redeem ZK for underlying value.

Verified
Who is liable if redemption fails?

A legally accountable entity and jurisdiction — not a DAO label.

ZK Nation's governance structure names the ZKsync Association (maintains governance docs and the zk-governance code) and the ZKsync Foundation (holds programmatic minting rights up to its Ecosystem Initiatives cap), but jurisdictions and any token-holder liability for either entity were not publicly confirmed in sources reviewed — hence PARTIALLY VERIFIED rather than full.

❔ UNVERIFIED means not yet researched — not disproven. Rows marked “researched” were investigated and independent evidence was not found. Coverage expands as FORTUNA verifies. This dossier was researched 2026-09-15. Method: FORA-01 Asset Claim Verification Protocol.

❔ Frequently asked questions

What is ZKsync (ZK)?

ZKsync is an Ethereum ZK-rollup ecosystem (the Elastic Network) of interoperable ZK Chains built on the open-source ZK Stack. It uses zero-knowledge validity proofs settled to Ethereum for scaling with L1-grade security.

What is ZKsync's verification status?

ZKsync (ZK) carries verification class B (Class B): a mix of VERIFIED and PARTIALLY VERIFIED with no UNVERIFIED and no CONTRADICTED findings. What would change it: Independent evidence closing the partially verified gaps would move it to Class A.
